At Drew Eckl & Farnham, growth often starts with opportunity and a willingness to raise your hand when it comes. Bernadette Gilbert’s journey from Records Assistant to Legal Assistant is a great example of how dedication, flexibility, and a positive attitude can open doors at DEF.
Starting from the Ground Floor
In October 2016, Bernadette Gilbert began her career at DEF in the Records Department. Her early responsibilities included moving files from the firm’s old office to its current location in the Truist building, organizing paper documents, and creating new files as needed. “While I was in Records, I was also offered the chance to help at the front desk when the receptionist was out. That opened the door to learning more about other parts of the firm.”
Her work ethic didn’t go unnoticed. She was soon asked to assist one of the firm’s legal assistants with organizing paperwork. This part-time role quickly evolved into a split position between the Records Department and a legal section.
Climbing the Ladder
In 2018, she was officially offered a role as an Administrative Assistant for one of our Workers’ Compensation attorneys. There, she tackled a new set of responsibilities—managing case files, processing invoices, and supporting legal staff with administrative tasks when needed.
Then, in May 2022, her persistence paid off again. She was promoted to Legal Assistant for Matt Walker’s team, a role she holds today. “It’s been a steady path of growth and learning. Every opportunity helped prepare me for the next step.”
Facing New Challenges
Of course, the transition wasn’t without its growing pains. “One of the biggest challenges was adjusting to the level of responsibility. My team relied on me more, and I had to make sure everything—files, deadlines, calendars—was accurate and up to date. There wasn’t much room for error.”
Keys to Success
When asked what helped her adapt, she points to multitasking and attention to detail. “Those two skills made a big difference, especially when juggling competing priorities or time-sensitive tasks.”
Advice for Others
To anyone hoping to grow within DEF, her message is clear: be patient, be consistent, and don’t give up. “You may feel like you’re starting at the bottom, but with hard work and dedication, you can move up. It may not happen when you want it to—but it will happen when the time is right.”
Favorite DEF Memory
Her favorite memory? The early days in the Records Department. “We had such a great team. We worked hard, but we also laughed and shared stories. That energy made even the busiest days fly by.”
Her journey is a reminder that at DEF, growth doesn’t always come in a straight line—but with effort and a team-first mindset, it’s always possible.
