Meet Lane Hammond, one of our standout Summer Associates bringing curiosity, drive, and a sharp legal mind to DEF this season. A rising third-year law student with a passion for legal writing and a goal of mastering motions practice, Lane has already impressed us with her thoughtful approach and eagerness to learn. Whether she’s drafting persuasive arguments or tackling early morning study sessions, Lane brings intentionality and authenticity to everything she does—and we’re excited to have her on the team this summer.

What’s been your favorite part of law school so far?
“Though it might be an unpopular opinion, my favorite part of law school has been the writing assignments. I’ve genuinely enjoyed diving into a wide range of projects—from my law review case note to appellate briefs, persuasive motions, and moot court work. Each assignment posed a new legal challenge, and I found crafting arguments to be both intellectually stimulating and rewarding.“
Sounds like we’ve got a future brief-writing all-star in the making! We love that Lane leans into the challenge—especially when it comes to persuasive writing.
Why did you choose to spend your summer at DEF?
“Of all the firms I interviewed with, DEF stood out because I felt an immediate connection with the attorneys. From day one, I felt like I could truly be myself. I was also drawn to DEF’s reputation for trusting young lawyers with substantive work early on, while providing the mentorship needed to develop into a strong litigator.“
We’re thrilled Lane felt that instant connection—because the feeling is mutual! Our summer program is all about blending real work with real relationships, and Lane jumped in with confidence and curiosity.
What’s one thing you hope to learn or experience this summer?
“I’m hoping to gain hands-on experience with motions practice—an area I haven’t yet explored in depth during law school. I’d love the chance to read and draft a variety of motions, including some of the less common ones. By the end of the summer, my goal is to feel confident handling any motion that comes my way.“
Lane’s enthusiasm for mastering motions practice is exactly what we love to see. We can’t wait to see how that motivation transforms into real courtroom skills over the summer.
Are you more of a morning person or a night owl when it comes to studying?
“Definitely a morning person. You won’t catch me studying past 8 PM—I firmly believe in the law of diminishing returns!“
Lane knows how to work smarter, not later. We’re here for that morning grind energy!
What’s one fun fact about you that we won’t find on your resume?
“I’m on a mission to become a runner… even though I still hate every step!“
We admire the commitment—even if it’s a love-hate relationship. Keep running, Lane (even if it’s just for the coffee afterward)!
With her passion for legal writing, eagerness to dive into new areas of litigation, and thoughtful approach to every challenge, Lane has already made a lasting impression at DEF. We’re excited to watch her continue to grow this summer and beyond—and we have no doubt she’s on the path to becoming a confident, capable litigator.
