As part of this year’s dynamic DEF Summer Associate class, Katie Swoboda is bringing curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for collaborative learning to the team. With a background in education and a love for problem-solving, Katie is excited to soak up all aspects of litigation. Whether it’s through early-morning focus sessions or mock negotiations, she’s already showing the thoughtfulness and energy that make her a great fit for DEF.

What’s been your favorite part of law school so far?
“The Drafting and Negotiations Winter Intersession. I had a lot of fun working with new people and facing new challenges. I especially liked participating in mock negotiations.“
Katie thrives when collaboration meets competition. Her love for mock negotiations shows she’s not afraid to jump into dynamic, real-world legal problem-solving—something we value highly at DEF.
Why did you choose to spend your summer at DEF?
“I got a great feeling about the people during my interview.“
Sometimes, it’s as simple—and as important—as a good gut feeling. Katie connected with our team from the start, and we’re thrilled she followed that instinct.
What’s one thing you hope to learn or experience this summer?
“Everything.“
Short and sweet—just the way we like it! Katie’s wide-open mindset is exactly what makes a summer experience at DEF so rewarding. We’re excited to help her explore every corner of litigation.
Are you more of a morning person or a night owl when it comes to studying?
“Very early or very late. I need to think the whole world is asleep.“
Now that’s dedication! Katie’s quiet-study philosophy proves she’s someone who carves out focus when the world goes quiet—an invaluable trait for any litigator.
What’s one fun fact about you that we won’t find on your resume?
“I’m a former middle school teacher and Harry Potter fan. Every Halloween I dressed as Professor McGonagall and my classroom theme was Hogwarts.“
We’re not sure what’s more impressive—teaching middle school or pulling off Professor McGonagall every year. Either way, Katie brings a creative, thoughtful spirit to everything she does.
Whether she’s navigating mock negotiations or channeling her inner Hogwarts professor, Katie brings a thoughtful, energetic presence to the firm. We’re excited to see what she learns this summer—and we have no doubt she’ll leave DEF with a strong foundation for her legal career ahead.
