Douglas Burrell believes that his primary focus is to be a strategic partner with his clients. It is important that he understands his client's business, the people, the problems faced, and budgetary constraints that can impact the client's ability to resolve problems. Douglas has been a practicing trial lawyer for over 26 years. He developed comprehensive experience while serving as first chair on more than 40 jury trials and more than 100 bench trials. He has also taken and defended hundreds of depositions.

His practice consists of civil defense litigation with an emphasis on wrongful death and catastrophic injury, construction law, premises liability, transportation and trucking law and product liability. Douglas uses his substantial trial experience to counsel companies in evaluating the options and strategies for trial, including the use of pre-trial mediation. He has developed particular experience with national retailers, manufacturers, companies in the food & beverage industry, commercial trucking and transportation companies, furniture and construction companies.

Douglas serves as the general counsel of the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Counsel providing legal and strategic business advice to the Counsel including contract review and negotiation, employment matters, and other transactional matters. If litigation support is needed, Douglas serves as lead trail counsel on those matters.

Douglas began his legal career in Cedar Rapids, Iowa practicing in a distinguished civil litigation firm. He later became a Prosecutor where he obtained extensive jury trial experience. Prior to joining the Firm, Douglas worked in the Macon, Georgia City Attorney’s office where he assisted in resolving various issues involving federal and state legislation and local ordinances.

He also participated in negotiations with the National Basketball Association to place one of the first NBA Developmental League teams in Macon, Georgia. While an undergraduate student, Douglas was a two-time letter winner on the University of Iowa football team and played in the 1986 Rose Bowl.

In addition to his role as co-chair of the Firm’s Diversity Committee, Douglas serves the legal profession in a variety of capacities. For several years he has been an active member of DRI, a national membership organization for civil defense attorneys, in-house counsel, and insurance companies. In 2018, Douglas was chosen to serve as the DRI Second Vice President. In 2021, Douglas will serve as President of DRI.  From 2013-2019, Douglas served on DRI’s National Board of Directors. Prior to that, he served for two years as Chair of DRI’s Diversity Steering Committee and was active on the planning committee for DRI’s Diversity for Success Seminar and Corporate Expo from 2007-2013. He served as Faculty from 2011-2016, serving as Chair in 2014 and 2015 for the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association’s Trial and Mediation Academy. He has served as Faculty for NITA’s Deposition Skills Program from 2010-2014. In 2013, Douglas was accepted as a member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, The International Association of Defense Counsel, and the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.

Awards and Recognition:

In 2013, Douglas received the DRI Davis Carr Outstanding Committee Chair Award.

In 2016, Douglas was chosen to be part of the University of Iowa College of Law’s prominent 150 alumni for their sesquicentennial year.  This recognition shines a light on those who have made outstanding achievements near and far. Among the featured alumni are trailblazers, leaders, and people passionate of Iowa Law. He was featured in the Iowa Law  “‪#‎firstiowa: First Iowa, Then Anywhere” video which shines a spotlight on what a few alumni’s have been up to since their graduation. 

In 2016, Douglas received the DRI Richard H. Krochock Award which honors an individual who has provided exemplary leadership to the DRI Young Lawyers Committee, and who has promoted those qualities which enhance the public image of the Civil Defense Trial Lawyer.
